The Fisheries Minister Daglas Dewansnnda of Sri Lanka finds himself caught between two opposing forces: the fishermen and the villagers. The battleground? A proposed Tokyo cement factory and limestone mining project that threatens to reshape the tranquil landscape of Ponnaveli in the Kilinochchi District today(05/04/24)
Five Village people stated the protest in front of the proposed cement factory side and they blocked the Ponaveli road.
the Fisheries Minister brought five buses with people from various villages. The minister contends that the cement factory and limestone mining venture will usher in economic growth, create jobs, and elevate the region’s prospects.
Villagers Unite Against the Unfolding Initiative
However, the villagers—those who stand to bear the brunt of this industrial transformation—have a different perspective. They’ve preemptively banded together, resolute in their opposition to the minister’s plans. Here’s why:
Livelihoods at Stake: The proposed project threatens the very fabric of their existence. Villagers rely on diverse livelihoods, including paddy cultivation, coconut farming, sea cucumber aquaculture, livestock rearing, and traditional fishing. Should the cement company take root, these age-old practices will be disrupted, leaving families in dire straits.
Environmental Concerns: Beyond economic considerations, the villagers voice grave environmental apprehensions. The limestone mining and cement production processes could irreversibly alter the local ecosystem. Pollution, habitat destruction, and water contamination are real risks that loom large.
Demands and Urgent Appeals
The people of Ponnaveli, Walaippadu, Kiranchi, Verugal, and Veravil have united in their demands:
Halt the Cement Company Project: They implore the Fisheries Minister to reconsider. The potential gains must not come at the cost of their well-being and heritage.
Protect Livelihoods: The villagers insist that their livelihoods—woven into the fabric of generations—deserve safeguarding. The government must find a balance that doesn’t sacrifice their way of life.
Environmental Safeguards: The call for environmental stewardship is loud and clear. The project must adhere to stringent environmental regulations, minimizing its impact on the delicate ecosystem.
Finally Fisher minister went out of that place due to the people continues protest. We again show the people power.
