Today (02 August 2026), the people of Vayavilan in the Valikamam North Divisional Secretariat Division continued their long-standing struggle for justice by holding the 17th consecutive week of protests at Palaly Junction, demanding the release of their lands. For decades, these communities have been deprived of their ancestral lands and their right to return home. Through this peaceful protest, they once again called on the authorities to immediately release the occupied lands and ensure justice for the affected families. As a people's movement committed to defending land rights, Praja Abhilasha proudly expressed its full solidarity with the people of Vayavilan. We stood alongside the affected communities and actively participated in the protest, reaffirming our commitment to the struggle for land justice, human dignity, and the right of every family to return to their own land. The People’s Movement for Housing Rights presented the key issues faced by people without permanent homes, those without legal ownership of their lands, and families living in rented houses. The following agreements were reached: Establish a proper database on housing and land ownership at the Divisional Secretariat level. Appoint a technical committee to develop a suitable action plan. The committee will meet on 17 August 2026. Submit the existing data and information to the technical committee. Paralegal Programme – Training of Trainers Programme A two-day Training of Trainers Programme under the Paralegal Programme implemented by the Praja Abhilasha Network was successfully held on 24 and 25 July 2026 at the Soba Lanka Holiday Resort, Malsiripura. A total of 38 members of the Paralegal Teams representing 16 districts participated in this training programme. During the two days, participants received comprehensive awareness and practical knowledge on a range of important areas that paralegals need to understand when supporting communities in legal matters, including: 🔹 Important documents and forms required for legal processes 🔹 How to engage with and make complaints to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka 🔹 The current tax system and tax payment procedures 🔹 The importance of obtaining a TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) and the relevant procedures 🔹 Proposed locations identified by the government for mineral sand mining and information about the companies involved 🔹 The role of paralegals in protecting and promoting community rights The training sessions were facilitated by Attorney-at-Law Ravinda Sumathipala, Attorney-at-Law Ms. Darshika Ariyanayagam, and the Praja Abhilasha Coordinator. The main organizational arrangements for the programme were coordinated by Sanjeewa Sampath and Ajith Rupasinghe from the Kurunegala District. At the conclusion of the programme, many participants expressed the view that the two days were not sufficient to cover the wide range of important issues and knowledge required. Therefore, it was proposed that similar training and awareness programmes should be continued and strengthened in the future to further enhance the knowledge and capacity of paralegals and to support communities in protecting their legal rights. Promoting beekeeping Traditional Yams around the country

On 23 July 2026, a provincial-level training programme was conducted at the Department of Agriculture premises in Thirunelvely, Jaffna, for Self-Sufficient Unit leaders representing the districts of the Northern Province. The training focused on beekeeping and methods of cultivating and producing indigenous varieties of yams and tubers. The training programme was organized with the resource contribution of the Department of Agriculture and the sponsorship of the Praja Abhilasha Network. The main objective of the programme was to enhance the knowledge and skills of Self-Sufficient Unit leaders, promote indigenous food culture and traditional crop cultivation, and strengthen food and economic self-sufficiency at the household level through beekeeping. 2026 ஜூலை 23 ஆம் திகதி, வட மாகாணத்தின் மாவட்டங்களைப் பிரதிநிதித்துவப்படுத்தும் சுயசார்பு அலகுகளின் தலைவர்களுக்காக, தேனீ வளர்ப்பு மற்றும் உள்ளூர் கிழங்கு வகைகளைப் பயிரிடுதல் மற்றும் உற்பத்தி செய்வதற்கான முறைகள் தொடர்பான மாகாண மட்டத்திலான பயிற்சி நிகழ்ச்சியொன்று யாழ்ப்பாணம், திருநெல்வேலி விவசாயத் திணைக்கள வளாகத்தில் நடைபெற்றது. இப்பயிற்சி நிகழ்ச்சியானது விவசாயத் திணைக்களத்தின் வளவாளர் பங்களிப்புடனும், பிரஜா அபிலாஷை வலையமைப்பின் அனுசரணையுடனும் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டது. சுயசார்பு அலகுகளின் தலைவர்களின் அறிவு மற்றும் திறன்களை மேம்படுத்துதல், உள்ளூர் உணவுக் கலாசாரத்தையும் பாரம்பரிய பயிர்ச்செய்கையையும் ஊக்குவித்தல், அத்துடன் தேனீ வளர்ப்பின் மூலம் குடும்ப மட்டத்தில் உணவு மற்றும் பொருளாதார சுயசார்பை வலுப்படுத்துதல் ஆகியவையே இந்நிகழ்ச்சியின் முக்கிய நோக்கங்களாகும். 2026 ජූලි 23 වන දින, උතුරු පළාතේ දිස්ත්‍රික්ක නියෝජනය කරන ස්වයංපෝෂිත ඒකක නායකයින් සඳහා මී මැසි පාලනය සහ දේශීය අල වර්ග වගා කිරීම හා නිෂ්පාදනය කිරීමේ ක්‍රමවේද පිළිබඳ පළාත් මට්ටමේ පුහුණු වැඩසටහනක් යාපනය, තිරුනෙල්වේලි කෘෂිකර්ම දෙපාර්තමේන්තු පරිශ්‍රයේදී පැවැත්විණි. මෙම පුහුණු වැඩසටහන කෘෂිකර්ම දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ සම්පත් දායකත්වයෙන් සහ ප්‍රජා අභිලාෂ ජාලයේ අනුග්‍රහයෙන් සංවිධානය කරන ලදී. මෙම වැඩසටහනේ ප්‍රධාන අරමුණ වූයේ ස්වයංපෝෂිත ඒකක නායකයින්ගේ දැනුම හා කුසලතා වර්ධනය කිරීම, දේශීය ආහාර සංස්කෘතිය සහ සාම්ප්‍රදායික බෝග වගාව ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීම මෙන්ම මී මැසි පාලනය හරහා පවුල් මට්ටමේ ආහාර හා ආර්ථික ස්වයංපෝෂිතභාවය ශක්තිමත් කිරීමයි.

Training Workshop Aimed at Enhancing self sufficient unit leaders(Rural small food producers') Livelihoods! 🐟🌾 Another significant step toward uplifting the livelihoods of these SFP in the Eastern Province, under the "Praja Abhilasha"network program—an initiative by the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO)! On 05/07/2026, a special training workshop was successfully conducted for 13 self-employed entrepreneurs from Batticaloa, Ampara, and Trincomalee districts, aiming to boost their income by adding value to their rural products. Held at the Aika Institution in Kattankudy, the training session provided practical knowledge on essential techniques such as: 🔹 Proper drying methods for products (Drying) 🔹 Preservation techniques for extended shelf-life (Preservation) 🔹 Quality packaging tailored for marketing (Packaging) Unani Physician Vaseema Athif from the Aika Institution served as the resource person for this workshop, sharing clear insights on product quality and healthy processing standards. In addition, participants received valuable guidance on how to properly launch and successfully manage a business venture from the rural level.
